How zero-commission exchange actually works

"No commission" can still mean a bad rate. Here's how to tell the difference between a genuinely fair exchange and a marketing line.

Last reviewed: September 2026 by the Aramex Weligama team.

Quick answer: "zero commission" only means a fair deal if the underlying rate is also close to the mid-market rate. A counter can charge no commission and still build a 3–4% markup into the rate itself. Always compare the exact quoted rate to the live mid-market rate, not just the commission line.

"Zero commission" is one of the most common phrases on money exchange signs in Weligama — and one of the most misleading, not because it's always false, but because it's often only half the story. It's one of four things worth checking — see our full guide to the best money exchange in Weligama for the others.

The trick: commission isn't the only markup

An exchange can genuinely charge zero commission and still make a healthy margin, simply by quoting a rate that's already worse than the mid-market rate. If a counter offers you 285 LKR per USD with "no commission", while the real mid-market rate is 298.50, that ~4.5% gap is the markup — it's just baked into the rate instead of added as a separate line item.

In other words: no commission doesn't automatically mean a fair deal. It just means the cost is hidden in a different place.

How to check if "zero commission" is genuine

Rule of thumb: a genuinely fair "zero commission" exchange should land within about 1% of the mid-market rate. Much wider than that, and the commission hasn't disappeared — it's just been renamed.

Frequently asked questions

Does "zero commission" always mean a fair exchange rate?+

How can I check if a zero-commission offer is genuine?+

Check the mid-market rate for your currency, compare it to the exact rate you're quoted, ask directly whether the rate is the same regardless of amount and whether any fee applies, and get the quote in writing or on WhatsApp before committing.

What's a reasonable margin for a fair zero-commission exchange?+

A genuinely fair zero-commission exchange should land within about 1% of the mid-market rate. Much wider than that, and the commission hasn't disappeared — it's just been renamed.

Aramex doesn't charge commission and doesn't pad the base rate to compensate. The rate shown on the converter and rates table is the number you'll actually receive, and it can be checked against the live mid-market rate before visiting.
